LiquidWeb Review on Windows VPS

LiquidWeb Review on Windows VPS

Having been offering hosting solutions for nearly 20 years since the establishment in 1997, LiquidWeb now has a good reputation in the matter of reliability.

The company has been maintaining a complicated website on which you can find a large number of services including web hosting, VPS, cloud servers and dedicated servers. Among the services mentioned here, the latter three are the main products.

LiquidWeb claims itself as a leader in the managed hosting field. To reveal the truth about this, we have carefully reviewed several services by analyzing the cost-effectiveness, performance, technical support and reputation. And in this review, we will focus on the pros and cons of the company’s Windows VPS.

Based on careful analyses, we have made the following ratings from which you can get the general information about the weaknesses and advantages of LiquidWeb.

Pros of LiquidWeb Windows VPS

Windows VPS has been a long-existing service from LiquidWeb. According to our reviews and expert monitoring, the company does well in ease of use, uptime and support response speed.

Plesk 12 control panel

LiquidWeb offers both managed and unmanaged Windows VPS. In the managed plans, Plesk 12 is included. This commercial control panel features an intuitive interface, rich web server and site management features, rock-solid server security, and flexible integration options.

As one of the top control panels for Windows hosting, Plesk is able to ensure a good user experience. Besides, there are tons of tutorials online, so that you can easily get resources to learn even if you are not very familiar with this control panel. In addition, you can obtain a trial license from the Plesk official site for testing purpose.

The only piece of bad news is that Plesk is not included in any LiquidWeb Windows VPS plan for free. Instead, you have to pay $10/mo for it, or the provider won’t install it when setting up your virtual server.

Praise-worthy uptime backed by premium data centers

LiquidWeb is proud to announce multiple guarantees in terms of the quality of its infrastructures. These guarantees include 100% uptime for the network and power, and 30-minute faulty hardware replacement time. There is no guarantee for the overall service uptime.

For the failures of any of the available guarantees, the company claims to issue a credit to your account upon request which equals to 1000% of your hosting fee during the downtime. Therefore, a single minute’s downtime will result in a compensation of 10 minutes’ hosting fee.

To get the ambitious promises covered, LiquidWeb has built up three private data centers in Michigan and Arizona which all feature:

  • Great Internet connectivity and network redundancy backed by direct connectivity with Cogent, Comcast, Verizon and Level3, as well as smart routing and switching equipment.
  • Uninterrupted power systems with multiple UPS, advanced power distribution units and emergency generators.
  • Enhanced physical security and on-site security officers.
  • A fully redundant cooling system that regulates humidity and temperature precisely in order to increase the reliability of the facilities.

The redundancy seems great, but we still monitored the company’s service uptime, trying to get some more convincing statistics. The monitoring results are quite good, showing that LiquidWeb Windows VPS comes with approximately 99.93% uptime on average. Here are the recent monitoring records.

Quick technical support backed by an SLA

Heroic Support is a well-known selling point of LiquidWeb hosting services. No matter which service you pay for, you get the promises of 59-second phone and live chat responses, and 30-minute helpdesk (ticket) responses. Since these promises are SLAs, you are entitled to compensation in the case of experiencing longer waiting time.

The statistics published by LiquidWeb show that throughout the whole month of May 2016, the average waiting time for the initial responses is 59 seconds via phone, 52 seconds via live chat, and 14.25 minutes via helpdesk.

From what we have learned, LiquidWeb indeed has a good support team that responds to support requests quickly. Also, the support agents are quite knowledgeable in Windows hosting and Plesk.

Besides the 24×7 expert support via phone, online chat and helpdesk, you can also obtain some solutions and learning resources in the company’s knowledgebase and tutorial section.

However, there is still a small demerit. The ticket system, which is used by most people when seeking support for technical issues, is not efficient at all times. The support agents handling your tickets might have different levels of expertise, so the consistency is sometimes not guaranteed.

Cons of LiquidWeb Windows VPS

Though LiquidWeb is able to obtain high scores in reliability and technical support, its Windows VPS doesn’t seem good enough in the cost-effectiveness and speed. The lack of money-back guarantee is also a concern.

Exorbitant prices

LiquidWeb offers 8 Windows VPS plans which include a fixed amount of RAM, disk space and CPU cores. You cannot customize the amounts according to your own needs when placing an order.

In fact, all the plans are designed for high-end users with sufficient budgets and huge demands on the disk storage and bandwidth. Even the cheapest 2 GB plan is priced at $99/mo. And the most expensive 256 GB plan is available at $2030/mo.

Below is the detailed price and server resource information of LiquidWeb Windows VPS plans.

LiquidWeb Windows VPS Plans

Besides, all these plans come with 1 free dedicated IP, 5 TB monthly data transfer, Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system, and SQL Server 2014 Expression Edition.

By default, all of LiquidWeb Windows VPS plans are self-managed with no control panel included. As mentioned before, you have to pay extra $10/mo for Plesk. In addition, you may spend more for the following things when ordering a VPS.

  • Data backups: $0.12/mo per GB.
  • Additional bandwidth: $50 per 1 TB.
  • SQL Server 2014 Web Edition: $37.52/mo.
  • Anti-virus security: $10/mo.

Judging from the resource allocation of the plans, LiquidWeb Windows VPS is more suitable for large businesses and enterprises instead of developers, small businesses, or medium-sized businesses. The latter category of users are more suggested to go with a provider like Host4ASP.NET which offers more affordable Windows VPS starting at $24.95/mo only and allows scaling RAM, CPU core, bandwidth and disk space for any specific need.

No trial or refund guarantee

Though LiquidWeb offers really expensive Windows VPS plans, it doesn’t provide any opportunity for trial, nor a refund guarantee. 30-day money back is only applicable to shared hosting, while for VPS, you cannot receive a penny back as soon as the payment is completed.

This is unreasonable because most web hosts, good or bad, promise a refund within at least 7 days. The few providers like Host4ASP.NET even allow refunds in 30 days.

Considering the expensive prices, we do think it’s risky to use the Windows VPS provided by LiquidWeb.

Not-impressive speed

After reading through the official information, we have found a few things that should contribute to good hosting speed, including:

  • All Windows virtual servers utilize SSD drives for data storage.
  • CDN is available for all Windows VPS plans so that your website content is delivered faster to the viewers especially those who are located far away from the US.

It seems that LiquidWeb has been putting more emphasis on uptime than speed, and our monitoring has proved this. Though being highly accessible, the company’s virtual servers are not really fast, even a little slower than some excellent shared servers.

You can see some facts about the company’s server response speed in below.

Conclusion – Consider a Better Windows VPS Provider

Currently, LiquidWeb is not on our recommendation list for Windows VPS, and the reasons have already been presented in detail in this review.

If you want to start with a Windows VPS which comes with a refund guarantee, or transfer your site to a provider that offers outstanding reliability, speed and support, we suggest you check out Host4ASP.NET, a US-based Windows VPS provider with a high customer satisfaction rate.
